Preparing for Auditions:

* We talk about the story, setting, and characters of the show we will be working on. We introduce fundamentals in acting, vocals and dance.

*Students are sent home with an audtion sheets. All material on the audtion sheet will have been taught in class. We enourage students to memorize the monologue of their choice as well as the song. Students should also focus on making strong acting choices in playing the character with their voice, body and imagination.

Auditions:

* Students will perform the monologue of their choice.  We see how students understand the character and their comfort level in acting. We may ask students to read another line so directors can get a sense of other characters they may be suitable for. This does not need to be memorized.

* Students will sing indiviudally if they are comfortable. Students may sing with a friend. We listen of tone, pitch and rhythm. We encourage to students to continue acting while singing, since most musical theater songs are still telling a story.

*Students will then dance in small groups. We look for timing, form and if the student can dance and continue to be in character and sing.

 Casting:
Trust the Process: The beauty about SLK, is that no matter the role, each child has a lot of stage time. They are in almost every song, and dance. This show is only successful because these students come together and support each other, encourage each other and ultimately make a beautiful show, leaving us all happy and proud. They will understand how to step out of one’s comfort zone and tell a story in collaboration with everyone on and off stage.

Lead roles versus ensemble roles:
Lead roles may have solos and many lines to memorize, whereas ensemble roles will have less lines but will be more featured in all musical numbers. We strive to make sure every student has a solo opportunity regardless of which role they are cast in.

For students that have been with us for past shows, and have received a lead role, there is no guarentee you will play a lead role the following year. We want to challenge our students in playing different kinds of roles that focus on different aspects of acting, singing and dancing.

Costumes:
We don’t purchase our costumes out of a bag, we add elements and details to make each costume unique for their character. Our in-house design team will add some fun edgy elements to keep those characters looking unique, yet brand appropriate.

If a student is disappointed in their role:
We may not all get the role we audition for, but we hope all our families can encourage their children to feel proud of the role they got, do their best and work hard.  Dedication, building relationships and having fun are just some of the amazing aspects that the performing arts creates for our students and community. The script does not reflect everything our students will learn and do onstage so encourage your student not to “count” lines but trust the process and know that there will be lots to do onstage!
